Key Considerations

Before you choose your contractor, we recommend that you look at examples of their work. Key things to look for are"

• Consistency of stone colour, size, and material

• Good choices of stone blocks — especially step heights and lengths

• Overall alignment, fit, levelling, and cosmetic quality

• Do shoreline blocks rest on hardpan (bedrock) or only ground surface?

• Stability of stone blocks (especially where subject to icing)

Ask about their knowledge of the current biotechnical standards and legislation. You may also consider approaching the Department of Oceans and Fisheries, the Trent Severn Waterway, and your local building department to establish their opinion of a contractor's quality.

Also, think about the importance of your investment and what remedies you will have if the work is not to a high enough standard. It may well cost you more to rectify poor work than to have it done properly first time round. If you look hard enough we know you can find cheaper contractors than us however, will that prove to be false economy in the long run?
